7 Out-of-the-Box Ideas to Celebrate Senior Citizens' Day

August 21st is National Senior Citizens Day and while we should celebrate them every day, it's time to throw in some extra love to show just how much we truly appreciate them. Whether it's our grandparents, family friends or neighbors, seniors provide us with tremendous wisdom and love due to their abundant life experience. Have fun with these 7 out-of-the-box ideas:

Reflect on Family History

Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.com, and Archives.com are all online resources you can dig through to find out more information on your family history. It will be such a fun time to read about your ancestors with grandma and grandpa. Or simply interviewing them and getting to know what life was like for them back in the day will be sweetly nostalgic for everyone. Be sure to record-- it will be fun to reflect back on, down the road!

Volunteer at A Nursing Home

Not everyone has a senior loved one in their family. Show respect to late family members by visiting a nursing home and partaking in fun activities. Make it a weekly or monthly ritual to dedicate some of your time with individuals who may otherwise not have a lot of visitors.

Visit A Neighbor

You could also visit an elderly neighbor and go for walks or bring them some baked goods. You never know what someone's circumstances may be--perhaps they enjoy going to the beach or need to run errands but they are unable to drive. Offer some of your time and resources to make their lives just a little bit easier.

Make Them Food

Gather your closest friends and family and cook a meal that includes all of their favorite dishes. Another idea is to host a potluck with family members for all of your senior relatives. Have everyone bring a delectable dish.

Classic Movie Night

Rent a few of their favorite movies they enjoyed watching growing up. Host a movie night right in your own living room with lots of fun treats. Check out your local movie theaters to see if they are playing any old Hollywood movies or perhaps you live near a drive-in which will really bring them back to the good ol' days.

Take Advantage of Senior Discounts

Browse local social media sites or newspapers to see if any businesses are offering senior discounts. From movie theaters to community activities like sewing or pottery classes--there are sure to be some sort of senior discounts on this day.

Simply Spend Time with Them

Maybe your senior loved one would like to spend a quiet day on the lake fishing or reading a book at the library. Either way, asking them what their ideal day would be, is a good start. Chances are, they will want to spend their time with family.

This day should be all about them, so don't forget to not just give them gifts and a party but show them just how important they are. Do this by telling them along with handwritten letters and perhaps even a video of everyone with a message.
